Director of Safety

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Safety will be a critical leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs and initiatives across our entire 3PL network. This role requires a visionary leader who can drive a proactive safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, minimize risks, and continuously improve our safety performance. The Director of Safety will report directly to the Executive Leadership Team and will be instrumental in fostering a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Program Development:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS policies, procedures, and programs aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements (OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.).
  • Establish safety objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) and monitor progress against these metrics.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of safety management systems across all facilities and operations.
  • Champion a strong safety culture through visible leadership, communication, and engagement with all levels of the organization.

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure all company operations, equipment, and practices comply with federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits to identify potential hazards and implement effective control measures.
  • Manage and oversee all safety-related permits, licenses, and certifications.
  • Develop and manage emergency response plans, including crisis management and business continuity.
  • Manage relationship with IWLA insurance captive including but not limited to quarterly claims reviews and annual policy renewals

Incident Management:

  • Oversee and ensure thorough investigation of all incidents, accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and prepare required regulatory reports.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation claims in conjunction with HR and external partners.

Training & Education:

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, including new hire orientation, ongoing training, and specialized training.
  • Ensure all employees are aware of EHS policies, procedures, and their individual safety responsibilities.
  • Promote safety awareness through campaigns, communications, and safety committee leadership.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with operations, human resources, legal, and other departments to integrate safety into all business processes.
  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies during inspections and inquiries.
  • Communicate safety performance, initiatives, and challenges effectively to senior leadership and throughout the organization.
  • Participate in industry forums and associations to stay abreast of EHS trends and regulations.

Budget & Resource Management:

  • Manage the EHS budget, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources for safety equipment, training, and programs.
  • Identify and implement technologies and solutions that enhance safety performance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Master's degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CSP - Certified Safety Professional, CIH - Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8-10+ years of progressive experience in EHS leadership roles, with at least 3-5+ years specifically within a 3PL, logistics, warehousing, or manufacturing environment.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful EHS programs that reduce incidents and ensure compliance.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Experience managing Workers' Compensation processes.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to influence and drive change across multiple locations and diverse employee groups.
  • Proficiency in EHS management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel as needed to various company locations.
