CarMax is a data driven company. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Data Governance/Data Quality Engineer with at least 10 years of experience in implementing Data Governance and Data Quality frameworks/tools. The ideal candidate should have a comprehensive understanding of Data Governance, Metadata, and Data Quality processes, and be able to adapt these to CarMax specific needs. This role requires innovative thinking, a hands-on approach, ability to learn quickly and formulate effective solutions as part of an agile team. Familiarity with creating Critical Data Elements, data quality rules, alerts monitoring, and Issue Management is essential. What You Will Do – Essential Responsibilities:

  • Industry Best Practices: Stay updated with the latest trends in Data Governance, Metadata, and Data Quality. Adapt and innovate these practices for CarMax .
  • Subject Matter Expert: Serve as a Data Governance/Data Quality expert to support functional teams in using Data Catalog/Data Quality tools. Implement best practices tailored to organizational needs.
  • Data Architecture and Modeling: Have an understanding and/or willingness to learn about basics of Data Architecture and Data Modeling .
  • Technology assessment: Partner with both business and technology teams to assess or help assess future looking Data Governance/Metadata/Data Catalog technology tools.
  • Enterprise Implementation: Collaborate with various teams to implement enterprise Data Quality rules, roles, permissions, and support the Data Governance/Data Quality operating model. This includes any future Data Governance tools/solutions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with technical and functional teams to integrate data quality and metadata management into the data landscape while assisting resolve data issues.
  • Technology : Configure and assist with the management of cloud based Data Quality(e.g., DQLabs) and future Data Governance/Metadata/Catalog tools.
  • Cost Management: Partner with DataOps function to monitor and optimize costs related to Data Governance/Data Quality tools on cloud(Azure or equivalent) .
  • Continuous Improvement: Maintain a mindset focused of continuous automation and improvement. Adapt to changing business requirements and priorities .
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively with stakeholders and customers to build strong partnerships and teamwork across CarMax .
  • Adaptability: Be able to multi-task and quickly learn CarMax's business processes and Data Governance/Data Quality opportunities including looking for innovation in the Data Governance/Data Quality areas.
  • Data Analysis: Write SQL queries to perform data analysis and support Data Quality issue resolution .
  • Documentation: Document lineage, business, and technical data flows and/or assist in doing so.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Data Quality Platform and/or Data Governance roles (e.g., Principal/Senior Technical Data Engineer/Analyst, Data Governance or Data Quality Architect) .
  • Strong teamwork skills across the organization.
  • Hands-on experience in SQL (Snowflake experience highly preferred).
  • Proficiency in Data Governance/Data Quality/Metadata/Catalog tools (e.g., DQLabs, Atlan, Alation, Collibra, Data.world, Data Galaxy) .
  • Strong knowledge and leadership of Data Governance and Data Quality processes.
  • Ability to communicate and present to senior technology and business partners.
  • Familiarity with the latest trends in Data Governance, Metadata, Data Quality, Availability, Observability, and Reliability.
  • Experience in leading Data Quality operationalization including process and roles definition.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with proven leadership & communication skills.
  • Bachelor's/Master’s in computer science or equivalent area

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Snowflake-specific data governance or quality implementations.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure (e.g. Azure, Snowflake) cost management for data tools.
  • Certification in data governance or quality (e.g., DAMA CDMP, DQMP).
  • Active participation/leadership in transformative DG/DQ initiatives including AI based Data Governance/Data Quality capabilities.
  • Prior experience in the retail industry.

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center or Dallas Technology Hub in Plano, TX and have a Hybrid work arrangement.
