A Day in the Life of the Senior Backend Python Engineer

As a key member of the backend engineering team, you’ll design, develop, and maintain robust Python services that power a platform used by millions. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, including frontend developers, DevOps, and product managers, to deliver high-impact, scalable solutions that drive real change in public health and government services.

Responsibilities include:

• Develop, test, and maintain production-grade Python services and RESTful APIs using Django/Django REST Framework
• Collaborate with product managers and client-side teams to define solutions and clarify requirements
• Break down features into clear, estimated work items with identified dependencies
• Contribute to architectural discussions with an eye toward performance, scalability, and security
• Conduct code reviews and help set backend engineering standards
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across app, database, cache, and networking layers
• Instrument services for monitoring, alerting, and reliability
• Design and maintain ETL pipelines and data integration workflows
• Implement robust authentication and authorization across distributed systems
• Ensure infrastructure and code meet HIPAA, FedRAMP, and SOC-2 standards
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency with automation and AI tools

Requirements and Qualifications:

• 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering with Python as your primary language
• Advanced experience with Django and Django REST Framework in production
• Hands-on expertise with AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Cognito) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
• Strong grasp of system architecture, front-end/backend interactions, and performance optimization
• Background in building and managing ETL pipelines and secure data flows
• In-depth understanding of authentication/authorization patterns in distributed systems
