Maureen’s London

Maureen's London is a hairdresser specialising in Afro-Caribbean hair. We built the full site: her services as their own content type, a gallery of client work, a short course she sells and delivers online, a blog, and her reviews. There is deliberately no booking system — enquiries go to WhatsApp, which is where her clients already are. Every client photograph she supplied was retouched individually so the gallery reads as one body of work.

Beauty / Hair 6 things we built Visit the site
The Maureen’s London website

Where they began

A visual craft and a folder of client photographs taken in different rooms, at different times, under different lights — the honest raw material of a working salon rather than a shoot. Everything hung on making that look like one hand at work, and on not forcing a booking system onto someone who did not want one.

What was hard

Hairdressing is judged on the work, so the gallery is the site. But photographs taken in a salon over months never match — different backgrounds, different light — and a grid of mismatched images reads as amateur no matter how good the hair is.

The second thing was resisting the obvious build. The standard answer for a salon is an appointment booking system, and she did not want one. Her clients message her, she likes it that way, and imposing a calendar would have been us solving a problem she does not have.

Third, she wanted to sell a course — but a genuinely small one, two lessons. Small enough that a full learning platform would have dwarfed it.

What we built

The images came first, because they were the most work and they decide how the site feels. Each client photograph was taken individually and its background replaced, so the whole gallery sits on a consistent ground. The hair is what changes between images; nothing else does. It is slow, unglamorous work and it is the single biggest reason the site looks expensive.

Enquiries go to WhatsApp by a direct link. No form, no calendar, no account. She already runs her bookings by message and it works for her, so the site hands the conversation over rather than getting in the way of it.

Her services are a custom post type rather than a page of text, so each one can be described properly and reordered as the offer changes. The course is deliberately kept small — purchase, log in, two lessons — without the scaffolding of a platform built for forty. The blog is there and ready whenever she wants it.

The palette does the rest: soft peach against white, with the work itself supplying all the colour.

The key parts

6 features we would like to highlight
Playing
WhatsApp instead of a booking system

WhatsApp instead of a booking system

No calendar, no form, no account to create. Enquiries go straight to WhatsApp because that is how her clients already talk to her — the site hands the conversation over rather than standing in front of it.

A gallery that reads as one body of work

A gallery that reads as one body of work

Every client photograph was retouched by hand and its background replaced, so images taken months apart in different light sit together as a set. The hair is the only thing that changes from one to the next.

Services as their own content type

Services as their own content type

Each service is a proper entry rather than a line on a page — described in full, reordered as the offer changes, and managed by her.

A small course, sold and delivered

A small course, sold and delivered

Two lessons, bought online, with login and access handled on the site. Deliberately built at the size of the course rather than wrapped in a platform meant for a syllabus.

Reviews where they count

Reviews where they count

She has a great many happy clients and the site puts that in front of people at the point where they are deciding, rather than on a page nobody visits.

A blog, ready when she is

A blog, ready when she is

Built and waiting. She writes when she wants to, and the site does not look empty when she does not.

What changed

Enquiries arrive the way she wants them

Straight to WhatsApp, in the format she already works in, with nothing to administer and no calendar to keep accurate.

Work that looks like one hand

A consistent gallery built out of inconsistent source photographs — the difference between a salon site that looks professional and one that does not.

Income beyond the chair

A course she sells and delivers online, earning outside the hours she is physically cutting hair.

A premium look for a premium craft

Soft peach and white, with the work supplying the colour — a site that reads as high-end hairdressing rather than a template with photographs dropped into it.
